Where does all this waste come from?
Behind every enjoyment, there is always waste left behind. Unfortunately, that’s a fact. When you purchase items you’ve had your eye on or host a wonderful party with food and wine, you’re left with a pile of shopping bags and leftover food. Even when you feel like you’re living a minimalist lifestyle, moving houses can make you realize that you’re actually a collector, as random items emerge from every corner of your home.
Effectively managing the waste generated daily is essential for keeping our lives tidy and organized. However, when faced with an unfamiliar environment, this important task can become complicated and stressful.
South Korea is known for its detailed waste sorting methods, and I’ve heard concerns from newcomers about this issue. I’d like to provide a brief explanation about it. I’ll share practical insights rather than principles. It’s not difficult. Let’s get started.

Types of waste
Recyclable waste
Plastics, paper, cans, glass and vinyls, etc.
Unrecyclable trash
Contaminated plastics, unwashed bottles, and paper that is shredded or wet, etc.
Food garbage
Leftover or spoiled food
The difference between recyclable and non-recyclable waste is not in the material but rather in the preservation of form and the removal of contaminants. For example, if a plastic container used for takeout food is not thoroughly cleaned and has grease and food residue on it, it will simply be considered general waste and difficult to include in recycling. Similarly, if a paper shopping bag or paper wrapping is severely soaked with water or too finely shredded, it cannot be classified as recyclable.
How to dispose waste
Recyclabe waste
At the waste disposal location, there should be a green net prepared. If you are disposing of a small number of recyclable items, please place them inside this net. If you have too many items to fit into the green net, put them into a cardboard box or a white plastic bag that you have and place it next to the net.

Unrecyclable trash
To dispose of non-recyclable waste, you need to purchase designated bags. You can buy these bags at nearby convenience stores, supermarkets, etc. Some convenience stores may require you to pay for these bags in cash only. You can choose bags in various sizes, such as 5L, 10L, and 20L, with the largest bag being 75L. After filling the bag with waste, seal it and dispose of it. The disposal location is usually located next to the green net for recyclables.
Food Garbage
Food waste must also be disposed of in designated yellow bags, which you can purchase at convenience stores or supermarkets. Various sizes are available, including 1L, 2L, 5L, and 10L. You should place the bag containing food waste inside the food waste bin with an orange lid, as shown in the image. These bins may not be located directly in front of every building, and typically, 2-3 buildings share one bin.
